Episode One: The Great Divide
This film traces the origin of federal
parliament’s two-party
system and examines how this has impacted on ideals of representative
democracy. At its formation in 1901, the House was an arena
for independently minded individual representatives. However,
disciplined
political parties were quick to emerge, dominating and controlling
proceedings in the House. The episode concludes by showing how
party discipline continues to shape the House today.
