Technology in the Chamber

What are the broadcast lights in the Chamber?

991041-29A (Reps Chamber).jpgThe lights behind the Speaker and on the wall opposite the Speaker’s Chair are turned on when the proceedings of the House are being broadcast. Parliamentary proceedings are broadcast on radio by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). The proceedings of the House of Representatives and the Senate are aired live on alternate days. On days when it is not broadcast live, House of Representatives Question Time is recorded and shown on ABC television later in the week.

Why are there cameras on the Chamber walls?

The cameras on the walls of the Chamber are part of an in-house sound and vision system. The system records proceedings in the Chamber for television and also transmits a live broadcast throughout the building. This allows Members to keep up with events in the Chamber while they are working in their offices. A live broadcast of proceedings in the Chamber is also available on the Internet.
