Shadow Ministers

What is a shadow Minister?

PatHNP13.jpgA shadow Minister is a Member of the opposition party or coalition who keeps a check on the activities and responsibilities of a government Minister. There is usually a shadow Minister for every government portfolio or policy area. Some shadow Ministers may cover several portfolios.

Together, the shadow Ministers make up the Opposition Executive or shadow Ministry.

Shadow Ministers are private Members as they are not part of the Executive Government. In the House of Representatives Chamber, shadow Ministers sit on the opposition front bench at the Speaker’s left.

A shadow Minister ‘shadows’ or keeps an eye on the activities of the corresponding government Minister. This is a very important role within the system of checks and balances that is part of responsible government. A shadow Minister is the Opposition’s spokesperson for a particular portfolio or policy area.
